ACH Directo – How does it work?

The ACH DIRECTO network works as follows:

  • All transactions are initiated from an originator company and affect the account of a receiver.
  • These transactions are grouped in one file, which is transmitted to the originator bank.
  • To create and transmit these transactions, the originator company must follow the procedures indicated by its originator bank.
  • The bank, in turn, receives the transactions files from its originator companies and performs a distribution process where two files are created.
  • The first file contains “On Us” transactions, which accounts are destined to itself as originator bank, and the second file contains the “Not On Us” transactions, which accounts are directed towards the receiving bank, which is sent to the ACH DIRECTO network operator. The network operator receives the transactions files from all the originator banks and distributes the received transactions to their corresponding receiver bank; additionally, it creates the funds exchange among banks all the participating banks file.
  • The receiver bank obtains the transactions that were sent to it from the originating banks from the network operator and proceeds to authorize or reject the transactions received. In case of rejected transactions, the same will be sent again to the network and then to the originator bank. All the transactions sent within the established schedule, will be available for the receivers not later than on the next banking business day.
